Taken during sunset last Saturday. The most amazing clouds I've ever seen.
Post Challenge Edit:
I'm so happy about this picture, especially since I almost missed it. A co-worker called me up and told me to grab my camera and run outside. So I did and said WOW! I was so excited that I didn't even pay much attention to the camera settings. In hind sight I could've stopped down some to get a sharper picture but I didn't have a tripod. I had some repeat questions questions during voting so I'll respond here.
Perhaps the crop could have been better because there is actually about 10% more sky in the original picture but there was a huge ugly light post in the way. I couldn't clone it out because this was a Basic Editing challenge. As for the horizon, some wanted to see more and some not at all. Well, if I had shown more you would've seen more of the ugly street which is not good, and if I had removed it I think the picture would've lost perspective and the size of the clouds would've have been lost. As for the colors, they are actually pushed quite a bit but it is actually a direct result of what "Auto Levels" did to the picture. I normally don't use Auto Levels but I'm glad I tried it with this picture. Anyway, thanks again for all your comments and votes. It's very much appreciated.

My daughter just brought in some new stamps. They're from a series called "cloudscapes" and there's one on there that looks a lot like yours1 I actually like yours much better. See if this link works:

My sister-in-law (not a photographer) got one of those "Come out and bring your camera!" shots last winter. Also Co. Springs. Awesome mamata clouds. Colorado Springs is one of those places you get great sky shots. Learn to set your Eos to bracket without looking at the controls.
This shot is something else! Weird clouds... Can you say Close Encounters? I think the cropping is great. It shows the blue skies behind the clouds and, as you said, the building gives you a perspective on how HUGE the spaceship cloud was!!! Well done and a great ribbon winner!
Congratulations on your first blue! This is one of the most interesting nature shots I've seen on here. I'm glad you had the opportunity to share this.
Wow! Congrats on a very well deserved blue, and the 5th highest-rated photo ever for the Digital Rebel (144th overall, I think). Now get a high-res version uploaded to DPCPrints pronto and tell Mike Daniels where to find them!
Woohoo! My first Blue ribbon. I've been waiting for a long time. Now I can participate in the multi-ribbon winners challenges. =D Thanks for the generous votes everyone.
Awesome shot! Too bad we never have skies like that over here. There always seems to be interesting cloud formations in the central part of the continent. Keep up the god work.
I'm glad you got a shot of this! The one time in my life I didn't have a camera with me and we had this sky in Col Springs! Beautiful job of capturing this... I still can't believe I missed it. I'm envious!
Give me a call sometime if you want to go shoot... 440-4150

This sky looks mad. lol What an amazing capture and beauty to be added to the DPc archives. Congratulations on your blue with this turbulent image that truly humbles the homo sapiens and all creatures great and small.
Amazing sky and colors! What was going on here? I've never seen anything like this! It looks like we're about to either be invaded by aliens or the Lord is returning!
oh, REALLY strong. This is the only "atmosphere" photo I've seen thus far int he challenge that isa ctually working to the topic. I might prefer it with no earth references at all, but to do that you'd have to photoshop the houses and trees out: you wouldn't want to crop that tight ont his.
this is an incredibly beautiful image, especially given that this was an open challenge. all the same, it doesn't really convey wind to me. but what do i know...i've never been good at interpreting challenge descriptions--this will probably ribbon anyway.
The colors and movement of the coulds are great. I also like how there is a bit of blue at the top showing the 'normal' color of the sky. I would have liked to see a bit more of the cut-off horizon line.
Amazing looking photograph..I have never seen clouds like that. The only thing that ruins it for me is the horizon...I would have liked have seen more of the ground or none at all, still amazing clouds
Awesome sky and colors. Like all the layers you caught. I am not sure of the necessity to include anything on the ground in this especially my personal arch enemy, the street lamp (although it does exemplify the great detail in this image).
Like the color, contrast, captured in this dramatic photograph. Ok, so the wind may be blowing in the sky, moving the clouds, but I see no evidence in this photo that is blowing on earth. I know, nit picking, so I'll bump it up a place.
Returning for a revisit. I think this sky is quite fascinating and your post processing almost lends a surreal beauty. I think you did a good job in creating a lot of drama here. I question whether you used gradient density effects on this image, as under basic editing rules, that is to my understanding forbidden. I'll assume your editing steps were within the limits of the challenge rules. Well done!
Wow - this is such an interesting cloud formation with absolutely amazing colors. You did a really great job with this shot and with representing the challenge.
