During an overnight trip to the Oregon coast with my wife, we reserved time after dinner to hang out by the inlet to Tillamook Bay where several rock islands stick out in the channel. The Sun-seeker app indicated sunset should make good sidelight. During about an hour of peaceful watching, a gradually increasing number of cormorants competed for branches on the tall tree. A seal head poked out of the water, then a bird surfaced with a large fish in its beak. When the sun went down, the warm sidelight appeared as expected. but this was accompanied by a shift of the water color from dull grey-blue to a more intensely saturated blue for a short time. My 24 – 70 lens was not long enough, and the 200-600 was too long, so I ended up stitching together multiple vertical shots on a tripod at 200 mm for a panorama capturing the important parts of the scene. Luckily the birds cooperated by not moving much during the process. Eventually I should get a 70 – 200 lens. Wonderful experience (and wonderfully understanding wife, who took some pics of the sunset off to the right, watched the birds, and then cheerfully read her book in the car). Unpressured time to fully enjoy the setting made for the best landscape photo outing in a long time (and I like the resulting image too).
