I've been fascinated by this destroyed car hidden in plain sight inside a parking lot in the centre of Milan since we spotted it a few months back. I had considered shooting it for the Aftermath challenge, but the place gives me the creeps.
This is literally inside the car park, a typical private car park under a shopping centre with entry barriers, card machines to pay and a lot of customers.
Except this is kind of the overflow area - you can park here. but everyone seems to avoid it because it kind of sends the signal that something bad will happen to your car!
Just to the left is one of the exits, again that no-one seems to use. Kids on skateboards hang around here at weekends, but the whole place has a bit of an eerie vibe. One time we took a wrong turn and ended up in the abanonded floor underneath - an enormous but unlit car park covered in graffiti and god knows what.
Anyway, this seemed like the perfect challenge for it so I went back, got my shots and scarpered before security came and asked questions. I was there so briefly I didn't even have to pay. Win win!
For the edit I basically looked at what is considered 'Grunge Photography' and tried to mimic some of the stylistic traits. It's more editing than I'm used to, and even than I'm comfortable with so I'm not sure how it'll be received, but it seems to be what the challenge calls for.
If any subject needs high contrast, odd colours and grain it's this one!
