I never took a decent photo of lightning as I am scared of thunderstorms. I guess someone scared me when I was a child. I got some advice from Riccardo (the_rkp and I put the camera on the tripod and ran 30 seconds exposures. Unfortunately my Sony infrared remote was useless so I had to dash out onto balcony every 30 seconds to press the button. That was scary!!
This was the only shot I got of lightning hitting the ground, all others seemed to disappear into thin air or happen in between the shots, very common!
I posted this photo on the local photoclub page and I got a comment: "Now I understand the terrible noise we had in Villeneuve!" (that's the place to the left of where the lightning hit :)

The yellow star-like lights are actually warning lights for boats to return to ports.

He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings for the rain; he bringeth the wind out of his treasuries.
Congratulations I know the feeling of capturing lightning, I've done it in my backyard, I wish I could have entered into a challenge but there was no appropriate challenge at the time. One day I will. It's a powerful thing to witness lightning, almost a very spiritual experience.
