With your notes it's easy to see why this exposure/presentation was chosen. I remember you commenting, years ago, about staying out of the way of a photograph. Your fingerprints are all over this but it's more about vision than creation. Looking for this magic is why I take pictures.
What a fabulous shot! And it feels almost an invitation to join the pack.
It is sad that anything other than human is expendable. (Well, in some circumstances humans too.) It appears that this ghostly pack is on a road, no doubt some part of the problem?
I am learning so much more than (good) photography here so thank-you.
My first thought was 'Hyena'.
African Wild Dogs are commonly mistaken for Hyenas but in fact there are many differences, both physically and behaviorally. Taxonomic Classification: Hyenas are NOT dogs!! Hyenas are closer related to mongooses and cats.
The saying 'less is more' is certainly fitting here (photographically speaking)
in spite of your description, I feel less that they are fading away and more that they are simply beyond me. I am reminded of Fergus calling me to join him. I must not follow.
They are already fading out, and I can feel an empty spot forming in my heart where I had not even known there was a "spot" before. A perfectly elegiac image.
your picture makes us feel like these creatures belong to the past already. And their gazing in disbelief (although this is a merely personal interpretation)
Beautifully real even as it dallies fancifully with, to my eyes, out of kilter focus and exposure. The composition is marvelous, both graphically and emotionally, as you seem to compose an elegy as well as a valentine. Lovely tones. Tremendously moving. So unhappy.
Dear Rich,
Thank you for this comment. I joke around with comments and photographs, but this one is an issue I am deeply passionate about. These astonishing creatures have so many unique qualities that I will mourn when they are gone. And they will leave us, because for reasons too complicated to go into here, they are not equipped to survive in our world. They hold on, but they will inevitably lose their grasp and fall. They are, paradoxically, too beautiful, too perfect, to survive.
So an elegy/valentine is a perfect characterisation of my photograph. Thank you.
