This cow is the matriarch of the moose family. In many respects, she decides where and when the rest of the clan go and what they do. I didn't want to neglect her, so here is a photo showing how alert and focused she is. She has a balancing act between managing her offspring and the bull. The shiras subspecies (Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho) are serial monogamists. The gigas subspecies in Alaska and the andersoni and americana subspecies in Canada/Maine collect small harems. Where I live, I've only seen one bull with one cow. There have been challenger males in the vicinity, but no harem. This could also be a function of the relatively small population east of the continental divide.
