Once again, my carefully thought out strategy was wait until the last day of submission to comb the last month for a couple of semi-interesting images, and then play around with blending modes. In this case I went with Darken. When I submitted this I wondered if I would have been better off just entering one of them individually rather than a mix of the two. However, it finished better than I expected.
