This is Peter Cohen, a contractor with 10 of his 20 kitties. I'd read about him and his extraordinary house and decided to reach out to him to see if he was interested in a pet portrait. As it turns out, he was.
But it took us almost a year to make it happen, as RL got in the way, and then he lost 6 cats. Eventually he got 10 more kittens, and wanted to raise them for a bit, before we tried for the portrait.
It finally all came together this week, and I drove up to his gorgeous home in Santa Barbara. Peter and I just clicked, he is a wonderfully kind and gentle soul; and I also clicked with a bunch of his kitties, who came out of and down from various niches, cubbyholes, and platforms to check me out. We toured the house for me to choose the set, and settled on this, which is the one I'd seen in the articles, and which fired my imagination.
As many might guess, the rule I broke is compositing. I rarely do it for my pet portraits because I'm usually able to get the shot in a single take, but these guys were really, really, REALLY excited and curious - it was their first time in this room - and were just all over the place. And there were so many of them! It really was, in every sense of the word, wrangling kittens :)
