While on summer vacation last year in North Carolina we walked the streets of downtown Asheville. Music is never far away as there are a fair amount of street musicians or buskers who play for gratuities. We came across this musician set up next to the Big Flat Iron sculpture at Wall Street. He had a large bag with an assortment of flutes and his Navajo/Wolf/Shepard service dog name Wiley (which by the way, was a real sweetheart sprawling out on my daughter's lap and wanting more belly rubs and attention). It was hard to get a really clean shot, but I loved this one because the flute player has such character. He played several lovely tunes for us and we gave him money before we carried on with our day.
It was not until later that day, when I looked at the pictures that I discovered he had a particular tattoos on his fingers. The tattooed letters spelled out the word 'FREE'. Many musicians, or for that matter any artists, seek the freedom to express themselves in the music or art they create. The freedom to express oneself in music, in words, and in visual creations is a concept that speaks to the soul. This street musician follows his passion and plays music; it is an integral part of his life. He is the embodiment of every free spirit who seeks the music of their own tune.
