What is UP with this Mary Ellen Mark who only knows people who appear severely depressed? Does she ever photograph anyone that's ... uh... smiling?? :D

I suspect that what arnamarie is wanting in the shot is less " tattered opulence" to make it "real". I can see that.

My intent was to show a really nice location... in tatters... with a well-tended man... hugging himself... for comfort.

There is an "on the edge" part of societies... that doesn't make the news.

The middle class man... trying to survive... and ... the world tears at him... so... he tries to hold onto himself.

The poor make the news... they get subsidies.

The middle class... get no subsidies... no help... lots of taxes... and... often... can't survive.

The rich... they're just as bad. They get just barely into the "rich" category... and they are taxed more than the rest and ... they can't hold on... even though most often, they've worked to get into that bracket... providing for everyone who makes less than they do... and don't work as hard or as much.

It's a system.

I don't understand it.

But... It doesn't work.

The ones who work, should be paid for it and should not have less than the ones who choose not to work (but are able).

The ones who don't (and can), shouldn't starve, but... shouldn't have cellphones and potato chips, and internet... and...

There is a bit of pride to know that you've EARNED what you have.

Great composition! Looks like you've made a bit of an effort to find a good location for your shoot. That is a big plus in my book! However, somehow I am not quite sold on the story. I can't really put my finger on what it is, but it looks a little bit staged. And the processing is really good. Maybe a little bit too good for this challenge I think, if that makes sense! Still, great job!
