I think I worked way too hard on this :P I fabricated a cookie-cutter-like device to fry the eggs in. Luckily the bread and the waffles both came in squares. A couple of plates from Target and some orange garnish later c'est voila. It started out being just square eggs and then when I was trying to line up everything I thought this would drive and obsessive person (like myself) crazy...hence the name. I hope you like it. p.s. I'm never working with food again.

Congrats on the 1st place Ribbon!! Greetings from the Critique Club };-)
Initial thoughts Very creative, great color, really meets the challenge, light seems a bit bright
Composition/ Content
The composition is fantastic and what really makes this shot. Everything balances nicely. No matter what I do, my eyes are lead to the square eggs which is really the focal point here. The colors are incredible. The square oranges are what really takes the shot over-the-top IMHO. I shows that you put a lot of work into this one. I believe the ribbon probably made it all worthwhile! LOL
Background I would have never used that striped background but I feel it really works here. It seems just a wee bit crooked on the left side a little lower but not really enough to worry about.
Camera Work - Technical The only nit I have here is that the lighting might be a little overpowering. Some areas seem a bit brighter, especially the silverware. It is bright and nicely lit but seems like it could have been even better.
Digital Processing - Technical I noticed that your comments were about equally divided on your border. I personally feel it may have made the shot. It really seems to tie everything together, both colorwise and shape and size. I agree with one commenter that the eggs could have been just a little whiter (and you need to work on those square yolks for next time!) LOL
Fits The Challenge Definitely fits the challenge as well or better than any.
My Opinion On The Photo The votes speak for themselves. A "kickin" shot from KickDrum that truly deserved a ribbon. Great job, and keep up the good work.
I would be happy to talk further about this shot if you would like to contact me.

Wonderful shot! There does seem to be a bit of an orange cast to the whites of the eggs. Correctable in Photoshop? I love the inverted orange slices forming a square. Brilliant!
I like the orange slices best and wonder why aren't the yolks square? I am longing for an E-20ish model in my future. I have been digital for over two years and have been a Coolpix 950 and 995 user. How do you rate the E-20?
Congratulations! Your hard work paid off! Although I didn't have a chance to vote this week (didn't enter either) I looked at all of the entries and this was my favorite!
Congratulations on second/FIRST place. Very interesting shot, I am glad you took the time to create it. I forgot to ask,but do you fix your breakfast like this often? Keep shootin'
Hahaha, I had the right idea, but the execution on mine was much worse than yours. Congrats.
Easy way to get square eggs is to microwave them in something square for a little bit...Then finish them by frying. If you try microwaving them they kind of explode ;(
Great concept! Very creative. The lighting is a bit too harsh. I wonder how this would look with top lighting. The depth created by the shadows are more unpleasing here than helpful in my opinion.
I mostly don't like borders, but I think it fits very nicely in this case. Good job!
I absolutely love this composition and the vivid colors as well, but I find the lighting a bit harsh and the border too thick to the point that it crowds the picture. I initially rated it a 10, but later knocked it down to 8 because of those reasons.
I also did a \"square meal\" picture this week. I really like the colors you have used and the symmetry. I especially like what you did with the oranges! I wish you had left a little more room in your picture to capture the sides of your plates. Good luck.
Very well conceived and executed. The square eggs are great. They don't have square yolks though. Oh well, you can't have everything. Nice job! - Inspzil
Whoa! What a huge effort to plan and execute this dazzling masterpiece. You better be a top 3 winner for that alone. Technique is impeccable ( focus, composition, DOF, color rendition, lighting angle, etc). Personally I would like a little more silver feel to the cutlery. Some folks might like plain placemats as opposed to the razzle dazzle color. Just two minor quibbles easily ignored. Good luck on racking up the big score.
I give you credit just for having the patience to set this all up. Also it's a very nice photo. Everything is very sharp and the colors are nice and bright.
Holy crap! someone has a problem. this is very pleasing to the eye. I see only one flaw the bright spots being reflected here and there set of the picture. looks like it belongs in gallery. 9
Hehe.. A brilliant solution to the title, and a fabulous title. However, I think the frame is hogging way too much of the image, and you cropped the plates a bit harshly, which lost you the 10-vote from me. (9)
Awesome shot. The colors are just wonderfu. It's a square meal..literally! My only comment is the color of the egg white, looks more like egg pink. Still, it's in my top 5 of the week. 9 =-)
After finishing all my voting I had to go back and change my votes around to make sure that this got the highest rating of all the "square meal" pictures. You definetely won that mini-contest hands down. Awesome shot. Square eggs! You outdid em all! Great composition
Very good, since you didn't call it a "square meal" you distinguished yourself from the 5 who did. And even if you had, your's is the best depiction of the same.
