 I shall always remember the day when I was humiliated at a camera store. I’m not professional by any stretch of the imagination, I’m just a Canon EOS 650D. I was minding my own business on a customer service counter between my owner and the consultant. They were discussing colour balance and ISO settings.

Next minute an old Pentax Spotmatic joins me on the counter, so as to say move over chum, I’m more important than you. I was the one who introduced automatic shutter speed in the seventies, that you now take for granted, you in all your electronic glory.

Well I thought that I’ll have the last laugh and arranged a meeting outside. It was there that I shot him.

A note from the author: I forgot to change the settings on the day. It was an f/16 day in the sun and it was just past midday. I managed to secure a small secluded spot in the shade. Daylight hit the subject but not as much as I liked. I tried a few shots with flash, but they were a bit over on one side of the Syd’s face. I only met him that day in the camera store and he was an obliging subject.

My ISO of 400 was a bit high, it could have worked at ISO 100. Instead of using shutter speed priority of 1/200 I possibly should have gone with an aperture priority. The camera had been set for shooting kids running and jumping and I had forgotten to re-set.

The other thing that I do not do a lot of is post production. Apart from a minor crop, nothing else was done in post. I still have to learn that component. I hope you enjoyed the image and I look forward to your criticism and comments. Cheers John Brennan.

A pleasing portrait that meets the challenge well.

Thank you for your quirky and helpful notes, you have correctly identified the technical aspects of your shot that would benefit from altered settings, ie., aperture priority and lower ISO etc., Having said that the end result is not significantly affected and is still a pleasing result that needs little improvement

Your composition is good with empty space for the camera to look into, the background is neutral without any distractions and the generally high key effect is complimentary to the white hair of your subject. To be honest apart from the altered settings there's not a lot else to add, well done, Sid
