Challenge: Free Study 2014-07 (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-1D X
Lens: Canon EF 500mm f/4.0 IS II USM
Location: Sylvan Lake State Park, Colorado USA
Date: Jul 18, 2014
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO: 2500
Shutter: 1/1500
Date Uploaded: Jul 4, 2014

This was taken at Sylvan Lake State Park in Colorado. We saw four species of hummers during our 3 day stay. Broadtail, Ruby Throated, Rufous, and for the first time, a Calliope! I managed to get a couple shots of him, but for some reason, I have not found them on my card yet, argh. I had only one chance since I saw him only one time.

Last year, at this very same time of year, we were just a few miles to the south of Sylvan Lake and I was using my 70-200 to take pics of Hummers, now I use my 500mm and what a difference! So much fun to use. Not very many Canon lenses can be shot wide open with great results, but this 500mm is one lens that can be.

I knew I was pushing my luck at over saturating the challenge with yet another hummer, but I just love taking pictures of these guys. It's a real challenge. Happy it did well and thanks to all who voted and commented.

Not very keen on all those images of this kind of birds, but this one really is one of the best I've seen so far. Great shot!
