This is a focus stacked image using 4 stacked images. It was surprising that he/she sat still long enough for me to focus several times without moving. It was fast, but effective.
Thank you for the nice comments and the nice score. Not sure where it will end up, but you all have been very generous. Thank you.

I just freaking LOVE this! The detail is unreal. Any chance you could show the originals so I can understand where your focus points were and how much the rest was oof? I'm getting really interested in focus stacking and stuff along those lines but I still have no idea how to do it effectively. Did I mention I really like this shot? Congrats on the more than well deserved ribbon too. :D
Congrats on the ribbon. Great result with the stacking.
I've seen the dragonfly stay that still. The wind or a breeze is the usual problem. I've got to try this on a calm day.
I was thinking the same thing, ' how did you get this critter to stay still' I tried to shoot a dragonfly the other day, they were all around this lake, but not one of them stood still for longer than a micro second.
Congrats on the blue. Wonderful shot. I love the expression on its face. That is incredible that you could get all those shots to enable focus stacking. (I have a dead dragonfly and I doubt that I'd ever get this focus.)
I'll admit I'm not a huge fan of dragon fly photos, but MAN, this guy has some attitude!!! The light reflection / shimmer on the eyes adds another dimension (in a good way).
The head on pose of this dragonfly is truly imposing and unusual. It offers an entirely new understanding (at least for me) of an incredible insect. The detail and depth of focus are terrific. And, oh yeah, it's fabulously symmetrical.
I could never imagining trying to capture one of these to take its picture..... but I think this is the exception..flies are not pretty... the details in the wings and the background make this powerful, just wow!
