I'm currently working in Kolkata (Calcutta), India for a few months. During my time here I have had the opportunity to get out and about in the city during the early mornings.
It's hard to express, either in words or images, how I feel about this city, because the range of emotions experienced on a daily basis is vast. It's hard not to be affected by the poverty.
This series of images were taken on the banks of the Hooghly River, by the Howrah Bridge. The Kolkata wholesale flower market is located here also.
In some of these images I felt there was a feeling of peace and calm - something that is not really evident when standing there listening to cacophony of noises. One thing this city is not, is quiet!
Life happens on the river. People wash, they swim, they wash their clothes, they discard the detritus from the flower market, they clean their teeth (really!) and so much more besides.

This burst of pigeons creates a tumbling sort of rhythm against the background rhythm of the bridge. It's very lively, and draws the viewer deep within the image. I like how the pigeon on the upper right seems to be actually emerging from the camera.
