I think actual childhood memories where I can "see" the scene go back to age 4-5. Growing up military, I can still visualize the Post in Baumholder Germany in 1964. I can vaguely see my Kindergarten classroom, and remember being taught (but never learning) German. I remember my room, our apartment and my best friends name....Jay Grooms. I remember eating Pea Soup at his house and loving it, but NEVER eating it for my mom....! I remember the excitement of going to a small German market, just off the base to get Haribo Gummy Bears, and sea shells filled with honey. I remember the bigger kids putting me under the boundary fence into the backyard of a local German residence...to pick (steal) his blackberries....getting caught... and peeing my pants because I was so scared.
But my fondest memory was my Superman costume. I can still visualize (like I'm outside my body looking down) wearing my Superman costume and digging in the mud. And I can still see the tag on the bottom of the shirt, which simply said, "Only Superman Can Fly". Today that might be a paragraph of legal disclaimer.
