I wouldn't have expected this much glare from a 40mm, unless it were really dirty. If this is a result of a dirty lens, then I would recommend NOT cleaning it, because I love me some sun glare!
This image fits perfectly with the feeling I get when geese first start migrating every year. It's a haunting distant "what is that...." sound that gains quickly in intensity. Soon they're right on you and the racket is undeniable. Canadians are invading!

It looks like the birds on the right are breaking for recess. This doesn't subtract from, but adds to, the silhouetted trees. The upper branches nicely frame the sun.
