Black and white is all about a very careful control of the tones and exposure.

The water doesn't look nice in this. It looks like it has been oversharpened due to the way the waves are. A slower shutter would drag them to create subtle movement, but I understand that was difficult with such strong sunlight. Good black and whit, nice and contrasty. 7
