 I'm still experimenting with the Nikon CoolPix L310, which is a P&S with very limited settings. This was shot in the "fireworks" mode - which fixes the focus to infinity, and aperture to something very small, then shutter to 4 seconds. A bit tricky, since the self-timer is disabled in this mode...

a sliver of mystery in negative dark. perhaps the key to the mystery is in that negative space.

Lots of negative space, but the subject does really hold any appeal for me.

Details: Use the surrounding space of your subject to create the wow of the photograph.

Yeah, sorta got this right anyway. I'm not sure that really wows me, but you got the rest of it right.
