My take on a classic of classics. Hopefully trying to show the duality of characters that exist within us all, and how it is sometimes a struggle to not let that negative person in us take the positive hostage.
Would've loved for this to be a Diptych or Expert editing, so I could fully explore the concept more visually since there's only so much I can do with bending my face into different bi-lateral shapes, and given the limiting ruleset of Advanced :)
Lighting:
Simple lighting. One strobe with shoot-thru white umbrella providing key light. Reflection off nearby wall providing fill light.
Processing: really straight forward
- Import into LR3
- Global adjustments to Exposure and Fill
- Crop to desired size
- Send to CS6
- Make duplicate layer
- Convert to B&W using SEP2
- Apply Wet Rocks preset
- Global sliders for Brightness/Structure and Contrast
- Control Point on each eye (Structure/Fine Structure/Brightness)
- Overlay B&W layer with Color version using Luminosity (roughly 50% opacity to preserve some skin tones and color)
- Hue/Sat adjustment layer
- Levels adjustment layer
- Contrast adjustment layer
- Replace color on eyes
- Send back to LR3
- Dodge and Burn eyebrows and existing wrinkles
- Global sharpness adjustment
- Global clarity adjustment
- Levels and Curves
- Save for web.
Would love for this to do well as I really like it. But this is now my 4th self-portrait in a row (unintentional), and I'm sure voters are getting fatigue with looking at my ugly mug. Not my best effort, but hopefully 6+?

Beautifully done. I do think this will place very high in the challenge, if not ribbon. I love that viewing each half independently of the other produces such complete characters
It's not clear to me which one is which here and I would have preferred a different approach to the book. Not enough of the split personality I am afraid.
It's a good image altogether that unfortunately does not captivate me.

6...it's interesting but something about it seems borderline cliche to me. The lighting reminds me of that strobe lighting you see used with all those athlete photos here and there. It is well crafted though and that knife makes me nervous.
My thoughts on this - shouldn't the knife be on the other side of the face to go with the "crazy" persona?
the snarl on the lip is overly shadowy, leading to a void there instead of shadowy menacing that i picture being there from the eye.
one further controllable change would be to have the Jekyll persona clean shaven to provide another layer of contrast to the monster. i can see where some may have issue with that visually since it is asymmetrical, but that is the intended purpose of trying to capture this image.
a 7 from me regardless.
bloody nice mate. nice how you and the model nailed the two different expressions. even more, if you look "blank" between the yes the moods balance is sort of a neutral glance 9
Interesting how this face looks wicked to me but really is only half wicked. One side is the frightened Dr. Jekyll. But even the smirking Mr. Hyde is not as scary as both faces stuck together. Interesting.
Cheesy eye colors, and arbitrary placement of knife, not interesting.
Shouldn't the knife blade be on the other side amplifying Hyde's personality, or is this Hyde threatening Jekyll? Anyway, technically well produced as a photo although the facial expressions doesn't quite fit with my impression of the story or its characters. 6
You made a very good choice here, changing the eye colors and expressions on each side of the face. I actually think this works, as an image, a LOT better than the heavily bilateral one you showed me earlier. I'm not voting on this, of course, but if I were you'd be in my 8 group right now.
I an one of a few that have taken on the” Comment on every vote challenge”. I will post the score I gave you then try to explain my reasons for said vote. Hopefully nothing below will be taken personally, and maybe we can both learn from it..
I think you did a damn fine job capturing both sides of the personality. Your efforts gain a 9 from me.
Has the duality, though the red eye doesn't seem to fit with the good doctor, if I have it the right way around, apologies if not. Nice grungy feel. 5.
