What a fun and interesting experiment this was. Thank you to all who commented. IT was brave to also put scores and I appreciate that.
Now, comments on the comments:
This was a sunrise picture. That's why there was little foreground detail. An evening shot would likely have shown my town in full lighted glory.
Sunrise? Well, few are stirring that early and a light mist obscured any details that (IMO) would have detracted from the desolation of the planned shot. And yes, I definitely planned to be there at that time. Racing rather quickly at the end, as the sky was colorful long before the sun came over the horizon.
The horizon is what it is; influenced by the coastal range of mountains.
The picture was designed pretty much as a rebus. The "eye" in the middle of the "robot" not all robots are humanoid, you know, so I felt the cylinder would make a good stand in. This resulted in, "Eye Robot or I Robot."
The book is a collection of short stories melded nicely into a full length book. and is a classic of its genre. Perhaps this robot is surveying its domain and determining how to enforce the First Law of Robotics.
What is exceptional about the range of comments on I Robot has been expressed several times in the forum thread accompanying the Challenge: each of us brings our own life experiences and interpretations to the party, and that, to mix in another metaphor, is what makes it a horse race.

Personally, given the source and the image here, I like the connection of the sun setting on the time of man as the superior force on the earth, with the "eye" watching us observe the last light, while still obscuring the horizon (our future with them over us).
One may also see a lack of technology being active in the dark buildings below, indicative of overthrowing the machine in the end, and we have gone full circle to rely on the sun, the way our ancestors did, with the reminder of what almost was, looming prominent in the foreground - sterile and lifeless.
i have to say that i think this is going to be a contender for my favorite image in the challenge and a definite 9+
Comment Challenge: Great clouds, sky, and use of what looks like an observation device as a robot stand-in. I especially like the placement of the sun.
Alas, I did not read any of Asimov's short stories. All this science fiction stuff lies on my shelves collecting dust.
Robots and such.
Your horizon (or my eye) seems slanted.
A few halos here and there from too much sharpening. Your shot is likable. But I do not find it oo stimulating visually.
At least not for me.

A very nice shot, but the tie to the book is a reach. The sundown reds are quite nice, and the scope as the foreground element works well. Would have scored it higher in a different challenge. 6
Not rating, but I like it. When you first showed us the image, it made me think of a robot that would fire a laser down upon some town or whatever. I like the clouds in the sky. Seems apocalyptic...
Pretty colors here. Not sure about the title?
I think this could have worked well in the sun-something challenge... there appears to be what looks like a "sunstar" in the image.
Beautiful sky! Really like the vivid reds and oranges!Wish the foreground had a smidge more detail though, but know it's hard capturing the huge dynamic range present in this shot.
I like how you've evoked the feeling of a robot simply by showing something mechanical with an "eye". The contre jour helps with this effect. Nice light. 6
