Wow!
Thanks for all of the comments everyone!!!
This was almost not submitted, (glad i changed my mind)
The original idea for wacky foods was this:
imagine... a perfect swirled soft serve ice cream cone....chocolate sprinkles... but the catch is: the chocolate sprinkles are actually ants covering the whole ice cream! YUCK
logistically, that shot is not very easy at all! (try to keep the icecream frozen while putting ants on it) so the idea of crisco squirted through a frosting thingy for cakes, with liquid sugar sprayed over the whole thing...
to much!
this was a very simple shot. catch 1 grasshopper, refrigerate for 20 minutes, take chopsticks and LOTS of red lipstick, point 1 flash at the ceiling, the other at the white background, and come up with a title that explains the photo, and VOILA!
Thanks again everyone!

Well in the wacky foods department, I think you nailed it with your presentation here! The image definately makes one do a double take. The aesthetically pleasing reds (which is a color shown to increase metabolism and inspires hunger which is why it is/has been used in kitchens & dining rooms -I watch too much HGTV:-) ) really contrasts with the unappealing thought of eating a bug. I love how the red tones really pop visually off of the white backdrop. You have captured some wonderful image details from the textures and gleam on the lips to the details on the body of the grasshopper. My only critique I have on this is that I am not to overly fond of the blown highlights on the facial skin seen just above the lip. While it does keep the image clean & simple by not adding another color hue that could distract from the reds it still doesn't look quite right. I don't know what the F-stop or shutter speed was but mayhap a slight adjustment there would have avoided the blown highlights in the skin in the top portion. Hmmm, or possibly even slightly adjusting the angle of the flash that you have pointed at the ceiling to illuminate all objects evenly.
Photographic talent aside, the use of "Thai" as part of caption was misleading as they don't eat such stuff in their normal diet (living there for seven and half years now as expat and never seen such things served in any Thai restaurants - perhaps the Chinese in southern China ie., Guangxi, Yunan, Guangdong do!)
Thank god you change your mind and decided to sumbit this photo! As an amteur photo, it gave me quite an insight on light and colour. One of the best photos I've seen around here so far.
Hey You, what are you doing fressing these cute little creatures?
No, you shot is superb and the execution is perefct with sweet loving colors. It was by far the strongest image I have seen in a while. Keep up that good quality and keep those images coming. dan
there are those outstanding lips again! wow! excellent job, Eric and congrats on the blue! this is certainly a high impact image with great color, composition and shock value content. You are compelled to look and then look again. well done!
I can just imagine the story immediately after this shot was taken ... the chopsticks slip, the grasshopper escapes and jumps right into her mouth ... LOL!!
ericlimon: as of this moment and this image you now enter the inner sanctum. My warmest congratulation. You are now another contender that raises the bar even higher. Kudos.
Congratulations on the blue! Given another 1/2 second you would have scored even higher. I had bumped you to a 10 (and removed the Librodo guess- LOL), but I hit the update button just as the server switched over and it didn't go through. ;-)
I love the red. This is a great photo, the only thing I don't like is the grasshopper, and that is only because they are the most annoying insect ever, I wish you lots of luck for this photo. ~10
Excellent and lethal technique use here to scare the hell out of the casual voter. The composition is great although not as delectable as the sensuos lips would have us believe. There are not many in this site that can accomplish this type of shot. What is that white goop on the lower lip? Previous crunch results. lol
Mmm protein! The shiny lips, white background, and great detail on the grasshopper really make this picture outstanding. Good luck, I hope you get a ribbon for this one!
Well balanced and supremely simple makes for a great picture! Love the shine on the lips. If that thing touched my mouth I'd have the screaming meemies!
Overall good concept and execution. I know you wanted a high key effect here and it looks good. I think that there may no be enough mouth showing, and that's why it feels out of balance to me. - 7
wow! awesome shot! lighting and composition is very nice. yet, the thing thats bothering me is the skin above the upper lip. its all white. looks edited. the pic is awesome nevertheless! very simple too.
Looks like a ribbon...I know lots of people will find this disgusting, but hey, that's life, right? The only thing I fing distracting about this is the amount of wetness on the lips, especially bottom center, other than that, I think this is the winner. I'm giving you my 10.
The must be fried first! Very good executed photo, I know they eat these kind of things (mostly in Isarn) I hope you don't suffer because of the grose factor.... 8
I chickened out of trying these in Bangkok as I had no idea how to eat them and couldn't ask *laugh* Supberb photo, can;t fault it at all. No way I can't see this being a ribbon (probably Blue).
Didn't you learn anything from that smoke bubble shot? :-) Actually, this picture came out absolutely great. It's my favorite of the challenge so far. Really excellent job.
Excellent color and arrangement. I think maybe such a striking image would have greater effect if there was a bit deeper depth of field. The far side of the mouth seems a bit too soft for the otherwise attention-grabbing photo. Great job nonetheless.
Hmm, nice and crunchy. And a very good image. Great choice of color, lips and chopsticks, great composition, focussed on the essentials, no disturbing distractions. A winner for me.
Seems that people are scoring "insect" images low because only discusting people eat them....that's sad because this is one great shot...both technically and conceptualy.
Love the lips... Would have liked to see some skin tone aboce the lips, but that is a minor nit-pick. Great shooting. Contradulations on your model not running the other way as well! 9
