the warped board is really throwing me on this
if you had expanded areas of it, or added layers above/below the board with other spaces it may make more sense, but as it currently just resembles a standard 8x8 grid that has been warped i don't see the necessity for the warping.

guessing that the prize for winning is eating the pieces?
