This was taken at a fireman's fund-raiser on September 11th. I was looking for an "out of the ordinary" team sport to photograph and Waterball seemed to fit the bill... I'm hoping there won't be a lot of other Waterball photos in this challenge...
This was my first time ever even seeing Waterball, but the concept of the competition was pretty easy to grasp once it was explained to me. A metal ball is suspended on a cable about 12 feet in the air. Two teams, each with two fire hoses, try to push the ball to the other team's side using the force of the water. In each six-minute game (the teams switch sides after three minutes), the object is to keep the ball on the other team's side of the line for as long as possible. Whichever team logs the most time with the ball on their opponent's side wins the match. The second hose (the backup hose) can only be used once the ball has been pushed past a certain point on the cable.
The best part of the day was that they allowed four members of the public to play in one match, so I actually got to put on firefighting gear and play Waterball! It was great fun (especially on a hot summer day.) I can see why firefighter's enjoy this sport!

ogh this is a new sport I like the way you have one side behind the water somewhat softer which throws the emphisis on the front row really good action
wonderful image. not your typical team sports action, is it? didn't even know they played that. excellent capture with its "action" so very well captured!
I don't understand ... These firemen have "Girlie legs"? :-) Actually, I really like the image. It has bright color contrasts, action, perspective, pretty good focus - at least on the central area of interest, and I really like how everything gets hazier as you move back further into the image (obviously due to the mist and spray in the air). And, it's different than everything else. Congratulations and good luck in the challenge.
