Jagar entries all tell a deep story. I probably don't have the eye to look for such stories around me. But I could find this one. Plate cleaner at the chinatown food center. Short stout fellow. When I was taking his pictures he saw me and flashed a wry smile. Managed to get this shot.
Processed from RAW and increased shadows, sharpened.

You may or may not be aware that this is one of the photos being used in the online "publications" referenced here: DPC forum thread on LBNelert I noticed it when I was searching for my own. There were so many from DPC that I could not document them all - if you want to have it removed, see posts from LydiaToo and Mike_311 on p. 5 of the forum thread. To locate it more easily, check both blogs and the main newsletter, starting with the dates when this challenge was in voting or shortly thereafter.
Thank you nam. I'm looking into it. The website looks shady to me.

Well, unfortunately for you, you are my first picture as a new member of the Critique Club! :)
My first impression of this image was that I immediately liked it. I am a big fan of shallow depth of field, especially as it pertains to portraits. I also love the black and white conversion, black and white really lends itself to portraiture imo, as it allows us to focus on the subject without distraction.
It's difficult for me to find something I might change about this, but after reading your description it made me wonder if we are missing something by not seeing what surrounds him? Perhaps a wider crop (if it was possible) would make this an environmental portrait and give the viewer more of a connection with the subject.
All in all, I really enoyed this and the scores agree with me. Congratulations on the new personal best and Honorable Mention! Keep up the great work.
First gave this a 9 but came back and gave it a 10, and a favorite. So well done, and incredibly compelling. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a photo that I’ve liked this much.
