2012 was an amazing year for me, photographically. I really felt I had an abundance of riches from which to choose. I decided on this one, which was taken during my Mojave artist residency. It is one of the 12 pieces I printed for the show, although I have re-edited to be more somber and monochromatic. The sky in the original always had little blown out bits, and in re-editing this I tried something different, and ended up liking the results. This was actually taken in the afternoon, but I darkened it to bring out the light (off-camera flash) I used in the cave. I hope you enjoy it.

I forget to explain what this is. There are hundreds of abandoned mining sites throughout the Preserve, most with barely anything left to identify them as such, a few with tons of rusting equipment still in place. This one was unique, as it is composed mostly of the remnants of miner's dwellings. The Mojave being out in the middle of absolutely nowhere, and far from any supplies, made it very costly to use traditional materials to build housing for the workers. This series of honeycomb dwellings were carved into the hills, with cubbyhole storage also carved into the rock and dirt. Most "caves" had clearances of 5 feet or less, so you couldn't stand up straight in them. This one, with the tallest clearance of maybe 5.5 feet, probably belonged to the foreman.

Fascinating, and I love the edit you did on this. Makes it very otherworldly, which is fitting, as your photographic journey has been out of this world this past year!

Makes me think security or what we think is security, the tiny little world we've built to protect ourselves from the impermanence of it all, shame it won't last either. Wonderful image Johanna.

Nice job on the lighting of this cave. Pretty interesting to see the wood framing... probably intended to prevent the roof from deteriorating further. The lower half is interesting. The top half is interesting. The horizon is centered vertically.... which leaves the viewer in a quandary as to which half to direct attention. 7
