I am distracted by the blackness that surrounds that middle flame, very distracted since I can't make it out

you need to check your monitor - I can see a big black editing blob around the middle lit candle where I assume you tried to remove some part of the image. The rest of the background may have looked completely black to you, but I clearly see this, which completely distracts from an otherwise nicely composed image
