Mesquite Dunes are one of the most frequented Death Valley (CA/NV) destinations. I wanted a picture without footsteps so I decided to walk around the biggest dune.
I saw these two guys walking back, their long shadows on the dunes and the evening sun created a dramatic light.
Soon I was alone in the dunes and the only sound I could hear was my own breathing. It was both beautiful and unnerving. As the night fell, I watched the milky way for a while.
Perception of distance at a place like Death Valley is altered by how much you can see standing at one place, I realized that as I tried to find my way back in complete darkness.

Awww, Vikas. I thought this was yours when I saw it.
Isn't amazing what light and shadows can do to the dunes?
And this is still such a small part of the enchantment of Death Valley.
I'm glad you didn't miss this part of the beauty.
The racetrack can wait until you plan a carefully researched week (or more) in the area.
THIS is splendid. Including those delightful two little people shadows down below.
ETA:I hope you have a few pics left over to show us from this trip.
The extreme darkness of the upper right bothers me a bit but I love the strata of the overall design and especially the two figures and their long shadows. Top ten for me. Voted earlier.
I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: Great landscape and wonderful layered tones but the distant people are a masterstroke. Additional interest and a sense of scale is given by their presence.
Critical stuff: Not really, though I suppose it could stand a crop from the right side.
