A difficult image to shoot as the Mom's are not known for their tolerance. Normally they dive bomb any threat with loud screeching and flapping of wings.
Crowned Lapwing (Vanellus coronatus), previously the Crowned Plover (Afr: Kiewiet). I am known as the bird whisperer at home. I talk to them in a soothing calm voice and mimic their calls. She is at least 12 years old and has reared 2 chicks year on year with her life partner. She trusts me enough now to let me get to within 2.2** meters of her, even with chicks.
We had a lot of rain; it's green and that has reflected on their feathers. Guess I could warm it up a little but this is as shot with some detail and sharpening enhancements and cloning.
Great capture! It must be nice to get so close. Beautiful with the young one (and the nice DoF). I already thought it was some kind of Lapwing (Kievit in Dutch), but I was missing the plume on the head (as they have here, but that's the Northern lapwing).
Wonderful dof here. The focus on the birds is brilliant. I was thinking that they looked like, but not the same as, the plovers we have here. (And it sounds as though they behave like them, too.)
