I did a burning light bulb shot for the December Free Study already. I thought it would be fitting for the smoke challenge as well. This time I learnt something new. If you switch the light bulb on and off very fast then you can get to use the lightbulb about 4 times before the filament blows. Also if you switch it fast and take the photo you can see the filament burning instead of just seeing a bright flash as in my December Study photo.

I perfer your original; I found the smoke more interesting and very pleasing to look at. Also, although the broken bulb no doubt assisted viewers in determining what they were looking at, I thought the abstractness of the first one had more appeal. Great idea - you're truly an original.
Congrats on YABR! (= Yet Another Blue Ribbon; an acronym that was created specifically because of you Gary!) Great shot; the glowing filament and the way it colors the smoke is terrific. I shall have to try this some time, sounds like fune... especially with the extra "tips" you provided this time around.
Congrats, well deserved win! I truly loved this shot, it was one of my tens in this challenge. :-) It was a good idea to show the broken bulb, too. Thanks for the description, too.
Thank you all for your votes and comments. This was the first thing that jumped to mind when I saw the smoke challenge announced, although I was a little weary of doing something I had already done before. But it paid off and I am happy :)

What I meant was that if you switch on and off the light very fast the filament doesn't burn right through, it just burns a little like you see in this image. You can do that about 4 times before the filament blows completely.
Congratulations on the blue! So, you can blow a bulb by turning it on and off 4 times real fast??? What kind of bulbs do you buy? hehe...I wouldnt be able to blow one of my bulbs after doing that a 100 times...
The Master!
Congratulations Gary.........superb photo!
I hope you accept my "tribute" photo ....."Rising" for what it is.
I aspire to your degree of excellence and attempting the shot was
a wonderful learning experience. Thankyou for the inspiration!
There's such vivid detail and sharp contrasts in this image - from the sharp shards of glass to the swirling white loops of cooling smoke. And it just hangs there and turns in upon itself forming exotic shapes as it twists into future oblivion. Perfectly lit, perfectly focused - absolutely beautiful. How can anything so acrid and harmful be so interesting and captivating? Wonderful image. Congratulations. Can't wait to see how many 10s you get. Anyone giving it a 1 needs to be drop kicked out of DPC. :-)
Innovative idea well executed. Background and lighting are superb at highlighting the subject. Contrast works well. Focus and DOf are spot on. Interest ing composition. (10) Wondering how many light bulbs it took to catch the moment?
man I love doing that :) Well timed pic...I wonder if you used a wide angle and cropped, or did a burst of shots, or just got lucky? :) very nice effect...P likes it :) 8
I rated this one the highest - it must have been an extremely tough shot to get and it came out very well. My only problem with it is that the glass of the bulb seems a little bit too fake.
wow this is one interesting image ! great use of composition and lighting possibly maybe just take away the closest of broken glass in the forground as its rather bright - draws attention away from the burning fillament
