 I played with light and dark and some unsharp mask, and probably a funny little plug-in called ultralux in Irfanview.

Thank you for your comments: it was LandonKane's comment that tipped me off to my mistake/inattention. So weird since I rarely go beyond basic and actually look forward to minimal; however, I do like the processing!

Love your comp. It's what I would have done with the scene. Interesting detail. Masterful detail in the boats and shore. Superb control of detail in shadows. The brightest clouds are on the line of blown out detail in a few areas, although I find the scene natural looking. One of the better images in this challenge. 9
