I've had to spend time with this one to hopefully put my reaction into words. What starts out to be another nostalgic cathedral shot becomes a sad, dissonent experience. The railing does it. It both frames the man on the bench and cuts him off from seeking comfort of the church or purging his misery into the trashcan. The way the black bar rudely chops through the church windows and then drops down and out is so viserally nihilistic - to me. It seems so relevant to our times.
