These are called Sarcophagidae flies or more commonly known as Flesh flies. These flies receive their name for breeding in carcasses, feces, or other decaying material and some species are also known to lay their eggs in open wounds of mammals.
I must say I really lucked out when I came across these two flies bumping uglies. This is easily my favorite macro shot I have taken thus far. I cannot wait until I get my new Canon 430EX II Speedlite and macro bracket in the mail this week and see what an off camera flash setup can produce.
Nothing too crazy was done in terms of post processing. Cleaned up the eyes a bit, and did some tweaks to the mid-tones, highlights and shadows. I decided against going for a tighter crop in an attempt of creating a sense of scale. Also, instead of positioning the flies using the "Rule of Thirds" I went for a more central position to try something different.
