I used a lot of dodge and burn (learned from Pedro's tutorial)
and then made another layer, multiplied it, and used Shadow/highlight to bring some detail back.
USM and completed.
I know the lighting on his face is harsh, and I should have diffused it.
Any processing criticism or advice you have, I'd love to hear it!

thats a pretty nice street shot. Not sure what you were after exactly. the face is a bit dark on the left, i think it would be nice to see it better.
it's hard to tell how much you've improved it over the original with out seeing the "before" shot. It looks like you darkened the truck in the background, which is probably a good idea. i would have done that.
Hey, I don't think I want to post the original as that gives the image something to compare to. I was just hoping to get criticism on the final image. I did darken the truck :).
Unfortunately, I shot this around 1pm? So the sun was up nice and high, and I didn't have my bounceboard out for this shot.
For a midday street shot, that's pretty darn good. The only nitpick I could make would be about the piece of construction gear in the middle that grabs my eye. Such a nitpick is also not fair to that style of photography. Street photography is not usually perfectly composed and flaw free shots.
I think you did a good job on the processing. My only complaint with your crop is the foot being cut off. As for processing, you might try Nik Color Efex Photoshop plug-in (they have a free trial download) and use the tonal contrast to give is some "umph".
Thanks for all the comments! I notice the foot being cropped, but that's just the angle I took the pic at and can't be changed :(.
As long as I'm not hearing any errors or weird technical editing being pointed out, I can safely assume this picture can be processed and still look good.
The story behind this: The two guys hop freight trains across Canada. Both are from Vancouver and left when they were 15. The guy behind the cardboard is almost 18, and didn't want his face in the picture (maybe his parents are looking for him?) They've been to Newfoundland and back... and are doing the trip again for the second time.
