Not sure about which previous challenge you are referring to but yes you can use textures and overlays. They are the only thing you can use that preexisted before the challenge. (So long as they are used as textures and overlays). Everything else needs to be created from scratch or photographed after the challenge was announced. I.e. no clip art. (Judi had an image DQ'd because of this however if she had doodled in the things she had used clip art for she would have been fine.)

That's apparently not OK. I got away with it early on, when I drew in my birds, but it was a split decision and we've been told it's not allowed now.
so if i had a textures that looked like a building and stuck it in there, that would be ok?
If you made a building-shaped selection and then added a bricks texture, to make it look like a building where none was, that wouldn't be using texture *as texture* in the sense the rule is intending, I don't think. If, on the other hand, you photographed some bricks tomorrow and did the same thing, cloned them repeatedly to create a building, that would apparently be OK. Seems a tad inconsistent to me, but it's a bizarre rule anyway. I'm frankly not sure why they bother having a date requirement at all on an expert editing challenge, but I'm not the boss :-)
It's definitely allowed now, it's kind of the uber-projection of the expert editing ruleset. He didn't actually "make it all up", the figure is comprised of pieces he photographed during the challenge week and then assembled/reassembled to create the android.
My take on it all is that you can use any pics taken during the challenge for any purpose in any way in any combination, you can create new content for any purpose in any way during editing, and you can use pics from outside the challenge dates only for textures.

yup that's correct, its 7-8 images combined. I layered the images and did not paint or "made up" anything ;)
edit: actually some of the rays and tear were enhanced through dodging, but the rest is from photos taken during the challenge

I still am going to stand by my reasoning that it's a Digital PHOTOGRAPHY Challenge, not a Digital PROCESSING Challenge. Obviously editing is a significant factor in this, but really....the only photo was the butterfly?

My highest-scoring image to date was in an expert editing challenge. Everything in it except the added birds is advanced-editing legal now, although at the time HDR compositing was not legal in advanced, and this image uses HDR compositing...
ok, so photomatix is legal then? how about in advanced?

HDRI imaging from multiple originals is now legal in Advanced Editing, yes... I added in the birds with the burn tool. We've since been told that's the same as clip art and we can't do it. What we'd need to do is go shoot some birds during the submission dates; then we can burn those birds in black and paste 'em in. Seems silly to me, but whatever floats their boat...

I think that for the future of DPC there really should be and EE Rule. There are some amazing talented PS people out there, that we could ALL learn from. So dodging in some birds is illegal, it seems , almost petty.
Maybe I am totally wrong, but I would love to see and learn how people do half the stuff in PP this way. Wouldn't it almost be 'up to the times' as well. How are we to learn new, exciting ways, to enhance our photography.
I understand that some people just want a photo to be a photo , and we have challenges for that. But an EE challenge would be mind blowing, think of all the things we could learn. And isn't this what this site is about, learning???

The whole point of this site is to work within the rules given. It's not the real world. Nobody is stopping you from editing however you want for shots outside of DPC. The rules here create boundaries that everyone must work within - that's part of the fun. I'm looking forward to a Minimal Editing challenge soon!
Well I think part of the challenge is to take the photos and edit them in 1 week.. if I can use any photo I've ever taken it makes things a lot easier...
