What I need info on, is the perfect blind, I could get within inches of the nest easily. I have to figure out how to do it without disturbing mom.
I have a little House Wren nest with 4 tiny blue eggs i it on my old Christmas wreath on my front door. It's not in a good spot to take pictures unless I get up on a little 2-step ladder and scare the mom away, which I really don't like to do. As it is now, every time we go outside we see her fly off and since we are going in and out of the house a lot now with all the yard work we are doing, I wonder if her eggs will be incubated enough to hatch.
Alan, I've been thinking of getting a blind like this so I can get close enough to birds. Maybe something like this will work for you?

Don't forget too, in addition to getting mom and dad comfy with the blind around (start from a good distance back, leave it there at least a day or two, then try to inch it closer and closer, like day by day. And if they start to appear skittish at all, back the blind up to where they were comfortable with it before) you have to get them used to the sound of the shutter. When I first started getting a housefinch coming to my feeder, I made a point of taking many shots while the chickadees and goldfinches were there stuffing themselves. Soon the housefinch saw how unconcerned the other birds were with the weird clicky noise, and I've managed to get some decent shots.
PS mesh...hmmm...could lead to a noisy-looking photo, unless you mean you plan to put it around the lens.
I actually got to hold a hummingbird once. There was a bird stuck in a huge cobweb in my neighbors garage. I took it out, cleaned off the wings and placed it on a perch near food. It was the most amazing thing I've ever held. So beautiful, glistening in the sun.

Susan, my thought is mesh about the same color as the roof, small slit for end of lens.
