I guess I will have no life outside of the computer now. I just played around with no real purpose on a "test" photo and I can't believe what is possible with this. I am way too dangerous with this until I calm down!!!!
There are some really neat effects and filters in there...here's a picture I did using the colored center effect:

Laurie, I love that! I found taht one by accident, too, and like I said -- I am dangerous! LOL. Hopefully, not having curves will be OK for now. There is a whole lot there I never imagined!
It an amazing program. I got Photoshop a while back, i had used it a couple of times but not a lot. I have been using it heavily for the last 6 months for all sorts of different things and i still keep getting amazed by it!
Oh yeah, get a good book on it, I am still finding ways to save myself hours by combining tools or even noticing one was there but i never saw!

Don't forget that wonderful resource, your public library. You can even search their catalogs online, call them to hold the book, then just drop by to pick up your stack of reading. And it's free!

Not weird at all. I own my share of the world's book collection, myself. I just think public libraries are a great, free resource that is often overlooked. So many times a book has held promise only to turn out to be disappointing or (gasp!) inaccurate. I borrow, then buy if I think it's worth it.

Question: what is the difference between Photoshop and Elements? I have used Photoshop since 1997 and haven't even tried Elements. Should I? Is it worth installing, or can I do everything in Photoshop (which I am used to)?

I assume you have the more sophisticated PS, like PS 7 or CS. Elements, from what I understand (which isn't much yet), is the less expensive, slightly simpler version. I am sure you have all and more than what I will have. But I have plenty to learn with this one to keep me busy!!
Okay, so I am not going to install Elements unless someone can tell me why it's better than PS7. :)

For me, I have used Photoshop for years and I love it! I don't know 'tricks' though. But, I do have that book "Down & Dirty Tricks". I just never looked at it for more than 1 lesson. I need to pull it out again! :)
Let us know when you post some Elemented work to your portfolio. Go check out my dpcprints to see my newest "Rodeo Drive" photo. I solarized it in Photoshop. I really like it, but I don't expect it to sell well, if at all. Who knows though. It's artsy! Haha.
Mirdonamy: I happened on your Rodeo Drive picture the other day and fell in love with it. I like "pure" photos and processed/artsy ones, and this is one of my favorites ever.
I spent a whole day re-doing most of my photo collection with my DIP9 last weekend and just loved the improvements. I can't wait until I can actually handle Elements! Then there will be no getting me away from my PC and camera!!
What's DIP9? Is it editing software? Also, how did you happen upon that image? That's awesome that you did! :)
DIP9 is Microsoft's Digital Image Pro 9. It is pretty good stuff and there have been people here helping me to get a lot out of it. I will probably continue to use it alongside of my new Elements, especially while I am just wading in with Elements. It is very easy to use, loads quickly and is easier on the PC memory (at least that is my impression).
I think I saw your Rodeo Drive on the "recently commented on" or "recently added" page? I like to catch those when I can. Yours jumped out at me; it just really appeals to me strongly.
