Jab119 - that looks an eery sight - very unusual (for me at least). I was once told that the moon appearing large on the horizon is an optical illusion but this proves it does actually 'grow' sometimes. Any idea why this is? Great shots.

Imagineer, yes it was errie, however the moon illusion is nothing more than a trick on the eyes. The moon does appear much larger, but it is actually smaller when you compare the moon close to the horizion to the moon a littlehigher in the sky.
here is a little sample I did a few months ago.
the orange/yellow colored moon was low on the horizion. the white moon was takenabout 45 minues later oncei got a litle higher in the sky.
the moon appears larger because it is near objects and you have some referance point to comparing 2 objecs sizes so it "looks" bigger when it is actually not.

I've never seen the moon as large as that with the naked eye and with so much detail visible. There must be more to it surely?
They say that if you hold a DIME between your finger and thumb and hold it at arms length it will cover the moon. Try it when a full moon is first coming up and then again when it is up in the sky a few hours later and it will just cover the moon like at moon rise.

People have been debating the source of this illusionn for centuries, and only recently have really convincing, well-researched hypotheses been put forward. You can find a TON of information on this by Googling "moon illusion". Just make sure you have a few hours to read it all, LOL. If you're technically-minded, it really is very interesting!
