The Tropic Shale is the 93 million year old bottom to an ancient ocean called the Cretaceous Western Interior Seaway. This ocean once separated the Pacific coast of North America from the eastern seaboard and stretched from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.

The Tropic Shale is rich in marine fossils up through and including plesiosaurs and large extinct sharks.

These photographs were taken in late January this year. Two pictures were taken using the Canon EF 70-200mm F/4L IS USM and two using the Canon EF 16-35mm F/2.8L II USM.

Anyone care to hazard a guess which lens was used for which picture?

Loving the last picture.

Hey, I have a quick question for you. I went to the painted desert. It was ok, I was a little underwhelmed to be honest, but of course i took a million shots. Have you been there and what are your suggestions for processing them?

I have been there years ago, but never photographed the place. Badlands have a unique photographic charm of their own. I'll miss the big party but we can review and discuss post processing on your images between flora takes when I get down to your area.

When it comes to post processing some say I almost acquire a personality when talking... but most folks think that is exaggerated.

I am really lookign forward to it, the flowers are really starting to peek out now, as soon as my white Lady Banksa (Tombstone rose) comes out, then you need to zip down here as the wild flowers will be in full bloom.

Talking of which, do you need a room for the night when you get down here, I have 2 spare bedrooms and 4 couches that you are more than welcome to sit on. It would save you a hotel room rate and it is my favor to you for putting up with me and the 'possibly' the kids on the flower trail.

And again, talking of which, I have some petroglyphs near me that we could do some awesome night shooting at if you fancy that. Oh and the cactus flowers are peeking out, will be ready in about 1-2 weeks

And again, I ramble a lot!

If you like science fiction, you might be interested in an {old) short story called The Great Nebraska Sea.
