Perhaps it's because I just switched from Firefox to Chrome, but when I look at a forum thread the poster's picture isn't there anymore, and I can't remember how to set that. Any suggestions?

Forum avatars is not a native feature of DPC. You must have been using the Greasemonkey script on this page. Not sure if Greasemonkey is available for Chrome and if the script would work in that environment or not.

and it is true that it is not a function built into dpc
