I teach photography at Elgin High School in Illinois. I have been laid off for next year. Public Education funding across the country is in a full scale crisis.
To hopefully raise awareness of this issue, and for some therapy, I have decided to start a blog. Please visit and share with your friends. I'm trying to get more stories from teachers affected by this crisis, so if you know anybody in a similar situation, encourage them to contribute.

Tom, I kind of know what you are going through, my daughter who also is an Art and Photography teacher is in the same boat--she teaches at Larkin Highschool in Elgin and was given her layoff notice last week also. I'll forward your blog info to her.

Yeah... not a whole lot. Unfortunately. I was thinking of blogging about cooking the complete Julia Child cookbook in a year, but I guess it has already been done.

Maybe you can arrange for periodic interviews with some of your former students, to discuss how their school experience is different without access to those classes. Video it and talk to PBS ...
Right now, even relatively well-to-do school districts, like those in eastern Contra Costa County, are suffering -- next year they will have lost the entire elementary school music program (used to start in second or third grade) ... with no partially-trained students feeding into them it won't be long before thry lose middle and high school music programs as well. The parents have started up a foundation to help restore these programs.
What is unfortunately scheduled to be the final All-Area Band Festival, Concord High School, California:
