I had an image in my mind but don't know if it's doable at night without the moonlight. I will try anyway. Better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all.
So this challenge just says to take a photo at night, it doesn't say it has to be outside or of a night scene. But I doubt the voters would get that and would give out 1's for any such image.
This is actually a very easy shot to get, as long as you have moderately dark skies to work with.

The post-processing on this is awful; it's actually painful to look at! I sure wish this challenge was running under Advanced, would give us a lot more latitude. A lot can still be done under Basic, though.

Well, I think there should be a visual clue that it's night. I mean, who cares if your studio shot was taken before or after sunset? ;-)
Dang! After working on my image for nearly two hours I just realized that HDR isn't allowed in basic editing. Damn fine photo too. Guess I'll keep it as a candidate for the March FS.
New moon darkness. Basic editing. Tough assignment, unless one goes to the extreme of photographing city lights or star trails. Even then, with a "new moon", it will be difficult to show foreground elements without dusk, dawn or light pollution. So, if you choose to shoot in dusk or dawn, the "discriminating" voters will punish, if the image doesn't look like their night experience. Definitely difficult to shoot for mass appeal, so I'll shoot for personal accomplishment. I dread the low votes, but will realize I've made a good faith effort with available light.

Nope...it's not legal even with one exposure. Pseudo HDR still uses the original image to create layers at different exposure levels...layers that contain data and not just adjustment layers. The process also blends layers in modes other than "Normal". It's not legal in basic.

You are probably correct about that. I recall in the "evening" challenge, my shot got a couple of critiques for not having any dusk appearance in the sky. The definition used by some left a very narrow time frame that could be considered evening. this is the opposite. You can't please everyone. That is proven every time I receive conflicting comments on an entry.

You're half right:-)
I use the photomatix plugin for photoshop and it does not create new layers,in fact it works with a single exposure,a single layer,in a 12 bit image.it works with jpeg but for best results better use raw.
The standalone photomatix does create new layers,and that's a no-no :)
