Have you ever had a shot in your head that you can see so vividly its like its been printed, matted and framed to hang from the wall? Have you ever tried to take that shot and not come any where near what you saw?
I had that happen to tonight and it was so heartbreaking because I spent hours on the shot and I just couldn't get it the way I wanted it.
Anyone else care to share their story? (I'd share pictures for mine but unfortunately its for the Children's Toy challenge and sharing the pics would be bad)
You are not alone. YES and when it happens I generally go for a re-shoot if I can ...one entry I did 3. That's right 3 separate shoots to perfect what I had in my head.
Yeah...I figured that a few hands would go up. I still like the idea so I am going to try reshoot it again. I'm going to have to research how to do the lighting I am visualizing I think.
met that criteria, but I went back until I got what I wanted (or at least, enough of what I wanted to be content).
Also, I was going to have an entry in the shadows challenge that didn't materialize because I couldn't get the effect I wanted with only me as a model (which I thought would work). Had I models to wear all black in the middle of last night, I would have been fine. Unfortunately, finding people to do silly photography things at 1AM is sorta difficult...
I've had lots that ended up pretty much how I wanted, and lots that were depressingly pale in comparison to my previsualization. It's the nature of the hobby. On the other hand, we've all also had those photos where we're screwing around and get something way way better than we thought we would. Ebb & Flow.

Very true. Its interesting that I went with the found shot (i.e I was out shooting and saw something cool) rather than with the one that I had planned out. I think the main thing I need to remember is that its a process. You don't just put a bunch of lights and props etc into place like Lego blocks, press the button and go home. If that's all there was too it we'd all be ribbon winners.

I can go out with an intention of getting a certain shot (or general type of shot) but still come home with something I did not plan on which was perhaps better. Or at least pretty good. Those "unexpected moments" can be more enjoyable to me. But this is not to say not to go out with an idea of what you want. You just have to adapt to what is given to you.

Peek: Into the Future or the Past?
Original idea was to just have my daughter peek through the doors. Then the bridal party and photographers got into the shot and my first reaction was annoyance that they messed up my shot. Then I quickly saw potential and snapped away. Better than my original idea.
Rain Dots Keep Falling...
Not true to *exactly* what I had in my head but we took a break and I saw my eldest scrapping her shoe on the floor. Loved the candid easy nature so snapped away. Looking at the forced poses and this candid - the answer was simple on which was the best one.
From a recent challenge- I just wanted to get some shots of hang gliders but this guy got in my way- so I used him in a composition. A more interesting shot than just one of the gliders I thought.
