I've been waiting for this for a while, but it has never come...
DPC should begin to give out BROWN RIBBONS as achievements to go next to the blue, red and yellow ones. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to do, and with the increasing number of people who view a brown as an acheivement on this site, it would be quite funny. All they need to do it make it so every challenge entry with a 0% statistic gets awarded a brown ribbon, just like all the 100%'s get blues.
to be honest, i think its weird when people purposely try to do it, but if they get enjoyment from it it does not matter to me. That said, I am not in favor of setting up a system that motivates people to try and come up with really bad images. Sounds like a bonzer idea for a new website though....DCC perhaps? Digital Crap Challenge?
But what about some sort of recognition for the image with the most 10's? I haven't looked into it so I don't know if that is always the top 5 photos but there may be some love it or hate it shots that get several 10's but finish low. I may have to look into that but I suppose that is sort of what the Posthumous thread is for.
yeah scratch that about the 10's. It appears as it makes sense, that the top finishers have the most 10's. I really should think before I speak or type but I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Yeah, there are those of us who can come pretty close to the Brown with one hand tied behind the back (and I speak for myself here) so extra recognition probably isn't really necessary.

Why would a photography site promote its worst images? Not a good way to attract quality or photographers.
Many people here at DPC pride themselves on achieving brown, it only seems reasonable. I wouldn't have created this thread if people felt getting a brown ribbon was shameful!

If these people actually pride themselves in attaining sub par scores then I fear that says a great deal about their character... and I have no interest in the least in supporting this type of behaviour.
... I may have to look into that but I suppose that is sort of what the Posthumous thread is for.
Perhaps that is the way you view the Posthumous thread... but not me.
My personal view on the Posthumous Awards is that it is a way of recognizing those image that exhibit somewhat, mmmm a bit , err... way out of the box thinking and avant-gardiste images, and I must confess that these awards have really opened my eyes to things that I might have otherwise overlooked.

If I ever end up getting a brown when I wasn't going for it (which I will never do), believe me, I'll be ashamed of myself for a while. I'm not a great photographer but I pride myself for staying out of brown contention in almost every challenge I've entered. :|
If a person sets out to get the Brown, they are seriously trying to achieve nothing. To award them a ribbon for achieving nothing, would mean they achieve something. Thereby ruining a perfect achievement of nothing with something. It would be a shame to deny them a perfect nothing by giving them something to reward their otherwise perfect nothingness!!!

a Brown by accident is no acheivement of course it is just poor ignorant phototography with no redeeming features, I say if a photographer gets more than say 6 finishes in the bottom 5 places over one calender year they should have their account closed because they will never improve.They also lower the tone of the whole site and cause all the real photographers anguish and shame,As well they prolly havent got the right social connections either.
We have to keep up the standard of the proffessionals here wouldn't do if the hoi polloi. got ideas above their station, after all. God if the natives get real restless it could mean another Tea Party in Boston..!!

I got a brown worked bloody hard for it as well. ( gives winnies sign)
I would like a motivational campaign like "Comments to the brown". It would be more constructive and would minimize the weird proposital brown entries. I don't like the initial idea of the thread though, i think it would motivate people to create non-artistic photos and some people may feel embarrassed to be officionaly recognized by the website as "the worst".
More than likely I will be getting the Brown in the Fine Art challenge and I definitely would NOT like to see it get any recognition anywhere. Seeing that score on my home page for 10 more challenges until it slips to page 2 will be embarrassment enough!
