I took this last Friday too. House fire in Lunenberg Vt. I could have had some really spectacular fire shots if I wasn't at work. As it was I didn't show up on scene until 1.5 hours after the initial tone. I still got dirty though. *grin*
Nathan - that is an awesome pictures, but I'm afraid it would get skewered in the voting for noise, should have used reflectors, higher ISO - etc because some of the studio people don't understand about shooting in the real world.

Why would he use higher ISO? That would produce more noise.

Okay, then he should have thought to bring a tripod.
Now the funny thing is....while I was on scene I was hoping that my tripod was in my car. Alas...it was safe at home. I did lean against a telephone pole for the shot, but it was starting to get dark and the scene lighting wasn't that great.
All I know the Shawn thought it was a great photo and made it his Facebook profile pic.
Does this photo really fit the challenge? The challenge is: Compose your subject so that it is "framed" on at least .. [more] two sides with either foreground or background elements.
The hoop is neither a foreground or background element. It is actually an element on the same plane. I thought the purpose of the challenge was to use things that you might not have thought about including in the actual photo -- things you might have zoomed past or cropped out.
So in my not so humble opinion, this

The cob image uses foreground elements as its frame, although very close to the subject, the green leaves are technically in the foreground. I see no problem with this image but I do see a big problem with the hoop image. It would not get a high vote from me because, to me, the hoop isn't a frame. Maybe with a tighter crop the hoop would become more of a frame but as it is, it would get a 4 or 5 from moi for this particular challenge.
