My camera had an incident with the ocean on my last trip (oopsie... got a bit too close) and although it works still, it hasn't been the same since. I am going to be looking for a high megapixel camera that also takes high-def video soon to replace my poor weathered friend... does anyone have any recommendations for me?
What did you have and what did you like or dislike about it? I don't see any gear listed in your profile. Megapixel count is over rated as a stat for comparing cameras and most newer models include video now- even on the DSLRs. We could use some more info to be able to make much in the way of suggestions.
i have a powershot a650 right now... not exactly a pro camera, but i'm not exactly a pro either. I originally intended to use it just to photograph some backgrounds for my 3d viz stuff and to shoot pics as a hobby... which has since grown a bit. I love that I can carry it everywhere... I love (and now need) the video capablities, and that will probably be the new camera's main function. The only thing about the old one that I didn't like is that I would have liked it to be able to photograph high-speed things more clearly (have a thing for taking pics out of the car window at 70mph... but that's just me). I have a minolta qtsi maxxum as well which I LOVE but since getting the digital camera I am now too snap happy to use that for most things.
Definatly need a DSLR... but need it to have mega video capabilities too... waterproof wouldn't hurt either as I have fallen into two rivers and had the ocean incident last year taking videos with this one. I was pretty good about keeping it out of harm's way until that wave came up out of nowhere and got me.
The megapixel thing is important for me only because the stuff I do with the 3d viz tends to get enlarged REALLY BIG... so I need to make sure that any backgrounds I take with it can be large enough to print or be projected clearly enough. I would also like my video to end up large enough to show nicely on a tv.
As far as the price range goes, I realize that what I want isn't going to come cheap... would be nice though!
Woo Hoo! Some of my best pics were taken that way... I'd rather take a chance and end up with a blurry photo when I see something great than miss it altogether :)
I think it's another in the long line of the "me too" consumer cameras the Canon like to put out.
Good article here discussing the trend of Canon's endless pursuit of cramming more megapickles onto the APS-C sensor.

If you have a look at DXOMark.com it will let you compare sensors from a technical standpoint.
I switched from Nikon to Canon a bit over a month ago. The Nikon D90 is one of the higher rated APS-C sensors and their pictures do look very rich and colourful. Ranked 17th on DXOMark, it\'s the highest rated cropped 35mm sensor there is, it's total score is just below the 1D Mark IV (not 1Ds.. 1D.) The D90 is getting pretty cheap these days, about US$750 or so for a refurbished one from Adorama (you'll need lenses with that). See Ken Rockwell's review (Google search "D90 rockwell").
In the end, it's going to depend on what you do with your camera. I went to Nikon from Canon because i do a lot of low light/night photography and the noise on the Nikon's looked more like film grain, less like blotchy colour noise, which was one of the main reasons i got the D700.

No I don't find sites like that funny. Nor do I find people who add to the Hysteria and misinformation of any brand funny.
The real problem is there is enough internet hysteria created that scares the bejeezus out of people about all sorts of things. As photographers adding fuel to the flames by promoting more hysteria about photography equipment is careless. IMHO if you don't have anything productive to add to the conversation, then don't add fuel to an already out of control fire. Since I shot(and still at times) shoot more then just Canon I'm not sure how you can call me a fanboi of any brand, yes my personal equipment is Canon. I've shot just about every brand there is, although never shot Pentax. But I've owned and shot Olympus, Nikon, Minolta, Sony, and Canon.

Excellent Matt... cause that means you're in a position to agree with me when I say that Canon are the laggards of the consumer DSLR in all regards except for megapixels.
They were last with weather sealing, last with live view, last with spot metering, last with wireless flash, last with auto ISO, last with visual horizon etc etc. Yet when they bring out another "me too" camera the Canon fanbois can't help but declare it the best current DSLR available. If they were as experienced as you with other systems then they'd realise how far behind Canon have fallen in nearly every area. This isn't coming from a fanboi but from someone who is happy to point out alternatives with reasoning why Canon is the poorest choice in the consumer DSLR market.
A question I asked in another forum was to provide a list of recent Canon innovations that weren't megapixel or fps related and the only valid answer I got? ........the direct print button.
They've also cut prices on the kits. I started a thread about the prices, asking if they're good deals... and it seems nobody that was supposed to respond to it actually responded. The prices are:
$1030 for body + 18-105 vr,
$1235 for body + 70-300 vr,
$1484 for body + both lenses.
...they seem like good deals for me.
