Try using the format "computername\username" when connecting to the Windows computer which I assume you can see in your Finder on the Mac.
Also, make sure your Windows printer is shared on the network, I don't know if that's required for what you're doing but it certainly won't do any harm!
It's shared on the windows machine, the computer can't be seen in finder however, can use go/connect to server and the ip address to connect to the computer. That brings up a login window.
For the printer, I believe it's finding it but is expecting login information but no window pops up to ask for it so access denied.
Yeah, my Win7 computer with printer attached suddenly became invisible to my MacBook Pro. So much for "ease of use". (Also, the damn thing won't stay asleep no matter how many documents, forums, and blogs I troll, and no matter what I do.)
Try doing a permissions repair on the Mac, using, "Finder" "Utilities" "Disc Utility" . It's a good idea to do permissions repair once in a while anyway.
You may be able to find the printer with the Mac by, "Finder" "Utilities" "System Profiler"
ETA, You may also try opening Finder, and type the printer name into the search box in the top bar on the right in Finder.
One other item, about the failure to enter sleep mode. Check your system preferences, and see how you have those things set. I had that problem for a while, and found that I had to allow a few seconds for everything to wrap up after logging out before clicking the "sleep" button for a while. A couple of rounds of permissions repair took care of the problem for me.
What if you plugged the printer into the Mac and shared it to the Windows machine?
If it were an iMac that is what I'd try next but since it's a laptop I don't want to be always disconnecting and reconnecting the printer. Makes no sense. :o/
One thing I noticed on that site that struck me as a likely solution was to install Unix printing services on the Windows machine which is hosting the printer. This would make it more likely to communicate properly with the Mac.
The Tiger solution doesn't work for Snow Leopard. I've tried the LPD solution and the connect attempt just times out.
With the smb connection it's an authentication problem which has no business being there since the cups printers configuration file does not have the line that everyone is saying to remove to correct the problem.
The windows firewall is off. My Shaw Secure firewall is on but is letting through all communication from the mac's ip address.

That's a Vista solution. The page referenced even indicates that it's not a solution for the Windows I'm running, which is Windows 7 Home Premium.
Hmm, I don't have a similar setup so there's only one more thing I can suggest:
Get rid of the Windows machine and buy a lovely new 27" iMac! (sorry, I know that really isn't helpful)
That is my next upgrade, just not right now. Printing isn't a real issue at the moment but I would like to be able to do it without some hoaky work around.
ETA: Mac's have their own issues, however my current problems with the mac has to do with windows.

With a little tweaking I've gotten the windows computer to be recognized on the mac using the computer name rather than just the ip. At one point, it could even see the printer though the printer driver is wrong for the epson.
I managed to add the canon printer but when I went to print, nothing happened. I'm sure it's just something with the windows firewall so will look into that more tonight.
Maybe there is something at the Mac Discussions board that will give you a good solution. If you don't have a "Mobile Me" account, you may be able to sign in as a guest.

Well, here's what finally worked, at least until Canon and Epson have correct drivers for Snow Leopard.
Turn on all file and printer sharing options that are private and domain in the windows 7 firewall advanced settings.
This allows for the use of the windows computer name in any uri's.
Use the Apple supplied drivers for the printer you are using. This is the Gutenprint v5.2.3 driver.
The epson driver from apple gives a warning related to the driver not being from the manufacturer and not all features will be available.

My mac has snow leopard 10.6 and I print to a Windows printer all the time. (But it's again, an XP desktop.) Steps noted just in case! Thanks for sharing with us.
