Is there any way for me to monitor what my pc is doing when the disc drive light is on and I can hear the drive working? Also, the "activity" light on my modem comes on and I may or may not be on line. I have been having connect trouble lately and ATT (my isp and phone service) thinks there is trouble at the incoming phone line and they are scheduled to have a look in a few days.
I really would like to know what the pc is doing, seemingly on its own.

If someone replies and I don't respond it is because the service is down AGAIN.

When was the last time you ran a virus check, and a malware check? What OS are you running?
On any Windows OS, hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and start Task Manager. Go to the "processes" tab and look at what is taking up the most CPU time.

For a Mac, it's Finder- Utilities- Activity Monitor.

Thanks guys...Windows pro.
I use the latest Norton 360 and do the checks all the time.
I just did a google search and may have found some help at //www.ghacks.net/2010/01/18/what-is-my-computer-doing-windows/
As you might have guessed, the drive is inactive at present.

try start\run type in "msconfig" (no quotes of course) and see what is going on on the startup tab

That works if it works (huh?), but most likely it's going to show you some obscure windows process or something else that will be almost impossible to link back to the offending process or program.

For a more comprehensive look, try Procmon (Process Monitor):

There's a little bit of a learning curve to it, but it will show you everything that your computer is doing.
