I'm sorry to rain on your parade here, but I just received a comment from one of you (I shall not name names) that was useless to me. It was so general, like a cookie cutter comment "I don't like this" or "I like this", but no explanation as to why. Are you leaving comments just to be in this group of mega commenters, or are you leaving comments to help the photographer?

I find myself holding back a lot of the time and just saying short remarks. I often wonder does this person really want to hear the full detail of what I'm thinking? Then I play brain football with how to make my thoughts not sound like I'm totally trashing thier shot. I don't intend to hurt anyone's feelings. Art is personal and often people have their HEART and SOUL in a shot. I know I sure do. I'm sure many (too many) of my comments come out sounding short and cookie cutter.
For me personally on the receiving end I'm happy to get one word comments most of the time.

Thanks Justine. I honestly would rather have no comment than something too vague. If someone loves or hates my images it would be great to hear something like: I hate grain, it's too blurry, ugly subject, needs a better crop, it's boring... etc. OK, I'm done venting.

very well said Justine, here is my added 2 cents...I will admit that sometimes I will leave a "I like it" comment because that is exactly how I feel about it...I may not be able to come up with an improvement because that is just it..."I like it".
Now on the other hand if I ever left a comment of "I hate it" and didn't explain that, then I should be shot. This has been a learning curve for me as to how to give comments/critiques when I have no formal education in photography...I try to give my first impression and what I feel that might improve the shot "in my eye". This has been a great learning tool for me...to focus in on what a person has done and how they achieved that or what I want to avoid in my own work.
Here is another thing...because this is done "anonymously" I nor anyone else know's who wants comments and who doesn't want comments...it's virtually impossible to give "you" the comment that you want to hear...BUT that being said...if at anytime I leave a comment and someone wants more clarification...I will do my best to try to explain what I have said (cause Lord knows I bugger that up at times)... and that is the beauty of this site IMHO. Because I would probably sugar coat things more if I knew who's picture I was commenting on as I don't like to hurt anyone's feelings...at least this way I can try and be as honest as I dare.

but what I'm saying is that I wouldn't just leave it at that...I would try to explain it...I mark all comments as helpful and each one makes me look at the pictures differently.
First off, MaryO, congrats on hitting 10,000 comments, well done!!
Secondly, love, since you brought it up about "useless comments" and "not helping the photographer", I have a question for you. On this image of yours:
I and several others commented that we'd like to see the eye. None of our comments were marked as helpful. I said in my comment "I really wish I could see her eye.....the shot is pretty good but I think it needs an eye." Not marked helpful. I thought I was helping you. I said I liked the photo but in my opinion it would be better if we could see the eye. Why is it that people who just said they liked the photo (with no criticism included) got their comment marked as helpful but those of us who offered criticism did not get our comments marked as helpful?
I have secret goal of unseating Jutilda in the list of top commenters! Phase 1 (making it to the top ten) is complete. Phase B involves a trip to Texas, a 5 year supply of liquid nitrogen and the book: "Suspended Animation for Dummies". Once she is out of the way for several years, I will have my work cut out for me.

I have left a bazillion comments. Sometimes they are "wow, I really like that," and other times I go on and on. Who doesn't want to hear that somebody likes something? I don't care why, although it's nice to hear. Sometimes I don't have time to go on and on, but I'd rather give roses to the living, whether they be long or short stemmed. :)
I am nearing 4000 comments left. Most have been marked as helpful. I'll admit that most of my comments are positive. Even if it's just 'I love it' or 'nice shot'. I'm not really good at knowing what makes a ribbon winning shot (duh, just look at my profile) so I don't try to tell folks how to make their images better. I do leave comments on images that I vote below 5 because I believe that I should explain why the vote was low. Again there may not be any technical or philosophical advice but at least there is an explanation.
Congrats Mary! I appreciate pretty much all comments that I get, remember "I like it" and "I hate it" are very personal comments and are coming from an individual and is their reaction to your photo. I've received 3,626 comments, marked 3,601 of them helpful, 23 were my own comments in response..so that leaves 2 that I have not found helpful. One said "x" and the other said "and". I have no idea what they were trying to say about my photos.
