Sorry if this was announced somewhere already, but I haven't been able to find any talk about it...
Noticed that all comments on images now have numbers associated with them along with the date stamp - e.g. 01/29/2010 06:28:57 AM · #10. They seem to run consecutively from top to bottom (i.e., does not seem to indicate, say, order in which the comments were made) and if click on the number it takes you to a page with the note "Access Denied You do not have access to read this thread.". For the life of me I can't figure out what the purpose of these numbers are. Is this a "feature", a bug, a secret code?
Anyway, that's my puzzle for today. Theories - grounded or off-planet - are welcome.
...so if I want to be #1 I should just continually leave comments on images so mine is always the latest comment. But is being #1 (doubleplus)good or bad?
It looks like in the forums you can link directly to a post now (or reference it by number). They are also numbered in chronological order there. In other words, it seems to make sense and be useful in a forum thread, but make no sense and be useless in the comment thread on an image. :)

but this could be really nasty if people are viewing it in different ways. For instance, if you're viewing it oldest to newest, the oldest is #1, if you reverse it, the numbers get reversed.

I'm there. Totally confused now LOL. I noticed the post numbers in the threads too, but didn't think about what they were for.
and since "a page worth of posts" is relative to the user's preferences, you can't include a page number either.
Am I missing something?
The reason I requested it was to reference specific posts in old LONG threads without someone have to search through the whole thread.
The magic is in the "action=jump" part of the URL. If you right-click on the number and select copy link, it will give a URL which will work regardless of pagination. This is the same type of link that is used by the arrows next to the forum threads on the front page.
